The rescheduled Annual General Meeting of
the Penzance & Newlyn RFC took place at the clubs Westholme
clubhouse last Friday, members were delighted that President Mr. Richard Evans,
was able to attend. In his report, Mr. Evans gave an update of the position
following the four key changes agreed at St. Johns Hall fifteen months previously.
With regard to the move to Kenwyn, the main positive was that the crowd
average increased by over 40%, but on the financial front to keep the facilities
and continue playing there was simply not viable. By opting to ground share
with Camborne, he was hopeful that it would prove beneficial for a number of sound
reasons, with it expected that the next six months would give a better idea as
to whether a professional team in Cornwall can survive financially without massive
injection from people such as himself. He was delighted that there are ten
Academy players in the Cornish Pirates squad, and is keen to build for the future
with Cornish boys. The Chairman, Robin Turner, in his opening remarks congratulated
those involved with the organisation of the clubs amateur 2nd. XV, and there
was praise also for those involved with the successful Colts and Mini-Junior Section,
words echoed by Club Administrator Terry Drew in his report. Mr. Turner
also advised that with regard to the Mennaye Development proposals there had been
some set backs, but it was hoped that suitable progress would soon be made As
Treasurer, Geoff Read reported on what has been a difficult year financially.
He thanked all the various sections who gave support, but was particularly grateful
to the President for ensuring that the club is in profit again. When Head
Coach of the Cornish Pirates, Jim McKay, gave his report, there was applause for
the team having finished third in National 1, the clubs highest ever league
placing. He feels strongly that the club is evolving in the right direction, it
being a journey to enjoy. One of the items on the meetings agenda
was the proposal that the clubs President be made a Life Member, which was
unanimously endorsed. Mr.Evans felt it a great honour to have bestowed upon him,
as he has also been immensely proud to President of the Penzance & Newlyn
RFC. Officers elected: President - Richard Evans Chairman
