Friday 18th. May, 2007 A large gathering
attended the Pirates 2nd XV's Annual Awards Evening held at the Westholme"
clubhouse, the event combined this year with annual annual award presentations
also being made to the Colts and Under 16 sections. The Pirates 2nd

8, the side finishing a successful second in Cornwall's 2nd & 3rd XV Merit
Table One. In total, 70 players represented the team during the year. Robin
Turner, Chairman of the Penzance & Newlyn RFC, presented the awards, with
special mention made to young back-rower Matt Rashleigh who picked up the Player
of the Year and Most Improved Player trophies. Another player in his first year
out of the Colts, Tom McFadden, also picked the Best Back award, whilst a stalwart
senior member of the side, who has done so much to resurrect the team, Scott Dugdale,
was a deserved Sportsman of the Year. The complete list of 2nd XV award
winners was as follows:- Player of the Year - Matt Rashleigh
Best
Forward - Matt Pascoe
Best Back - Tom McFadden
Most Improved Player - Matt
Rashleigh
Sportsman of the Year - Scott Dugdale

Saturday
24th. March, 2007 Playing at an earlier time of 1pm, the Pirates were
clearly in a rush to both score plenty of points and then travel the short distance
to Camborne to support their first team against Plymouth Albion. The amateur
Pirates second string were in sensational form, scoring thirteen tries against
Hayle, including hat-tricks for full-back Matthew Hanley and wing Kevin Walsh. Two
players from the Pirates Colts, Ben Taylor and Craig Stevens, also guested and
acquitted themselves very well indeed. Pirates scorers - tries: Matthew
Hanley (3), Kevin Walsh (3), Tom McFadden (2), Danny Hewett, Ashley Weston, Tony

the Mennaye Field on Saturday, scoring four tries in the match through lock Mike
Grieg, fly-half Ashley Weston, centre Tom McFadden, and wing Ed Skewes, one of
which was converted by Andrew Snell. In an open game, the score could well
have been a little closer, praise due prop Treve Williams and replacement Mitch
Holmes for their tackling efforts on the day. Pirates - B. Quick, E. Skewes,

Pirates 2nds 48 Falmouth 2nds 0
Saturday
3rd. March, 2007 This friendly match played at the Mennaye proved a
one-sided affair, the Pirates mix of experience and youth conjuring up eight tries
in the match without reply. Lock Matt Uren, in his first year out of the
Colts, played very well, whilst second half replacements Nathan Hosking and Matt
Hanley also impressed, Hanley's running in open play outstanding. Scorers

St. Mary's College OBs 34 Pirates
2nds 24
Saturday 24th. February, 2007 A Saturday morning
kick-off against St. Mary's College Old Boys made a good start to a weekend in
London. It was fifteen against fourteen, the Pirates travelling one player short,
but putting up a good performance nonetheless. Included in their line-up was Pirate
'exile' Jamie Eddy. The match was refereed by Cornish rugby stalwart Des
Thomas, whose son Dave played for the OBs side along with other former Pirates
Colts players, brothers Peter and Robert Whyte. Tries for the Pirates were
scored by hooker Ian James, lock Treve Williams, full-back Ed Skewes, and fly-half
Scott Randall who also landed two conversions. Following the game the team
went to 'The Stoop' to watch Harlequins play Bristol in the Premiership, the rest
of the weekend then developing into an inevitable blur! Pirates -

St. Just 7
Saturday 3rd. February, 2007 This was clearly
a comfortable win for the Pirates, the game memorable for a hat-trick scored by
wing Danny Hewett and an appearance from the bench for veteran flanker and 'Marine'
Tony Hands, a former 'Pirate' who has played for Withecombe in recent years. St.
Just arrived at the Mennaye a little short of playing personnel, grateful to James
McLoud and Ian Butterworth for switching sides to guest for them. Scorers:-

Saturday 20th. January This was another
entertaining 'friendly' encounter, the visitors to Wheal Gerry scoring six tries
in the match. The front-row played very well indeed, whilst praise was due teenagers
Matt Rashleigh (normally a back-rower) and Tom McFadden (normally a centre), for
volunteering, some would say press-ganged, to form the second-row pairing. Scorers
- tries: Wayne davey (2), Ashley Weston, Nathan Glinski, Steve Kent, Ed Skewes;
cons: Nathan Glinski (3). Pirates - Ed Skewes, Simon james, Steve Kent,

Sat 18th November Played at the Droop ground last
Saturday, this was not quite your normal game of rugby, though all involved thoroughly
enjoyed participating in this 'friendly' affair. The Pirates had fifteen
players, and Perranporth just eleven, though some sporting juggling around of
numbers helped the home side's cause - to a degree. Wayne Davey scored four tries
for the Pirates and then three for Perranporth when he switched sides, while there
was surely some form of Pirates points scoring record achieved by Nathan Glinski
whose personal points tally of 39 came from three tries and twelve conversions.
Mark Osborne also scored two tries when playing for Perranporth. Pirate
scorers were: tries: W. Davey (4), N. Glinski (3), A. Gwennap (2), M. Pascoe (2),
J. Thomas, J. Gwennap, M. Rashleigh, E. Skewes; cons: N. Glinski (12). Pirates
involved playing for the Pirates, Perranporth, or at different times both, were:

31st. December, 2006 This
fun rugby fundraiser played on a very muddy Mennaye Field looked to involve 50
players, the final number number actually involving just one less after Rugby
Tackle's Pete Hendrickson unfortunately fell lame in the pre-match warm up.
Despite
the conditions some fine rugby was played, a draw a fair result in a pretty competitive
contest which heled raise over £200 for MacMillan Cancer Relief.

December, 2006 This was a rather one-sided contest, the visiting Pirates
proving too strong for a game but overwhelmed Helston second string. In outstanding
form for the Pirates was fly-half Nathan Glinski who crossed for two of the 11
tries scored in the match, besides also kicking seven conversions. One
'Pirate' rolling back the years was replacement Nicky Brooks, who celebrated his
twenty minutes cameo performance with a try. Scorers:-

9th. December, 2006 The Pirates
proved somewhat too strong for their opponents in a one-sided match played at
the Mennaye Field last Saturday. Twelve tries were scored in the 'friendly'
affair, including a hat-trick for No. 8 Wayne Davey. Former Mounts Bay player
Richard Sharp came on as a replacement, a welcome chance for the commando to play
some rugby at home before leaving on a tour of duty to Afghanistan. Scorers:

2nd. December, 2006
This match, played on the
Mennaye Nurseries field, was another closely fought Merit Table contest. That
'Lanson' deserved to win, there was no doubt, but the Pirates performed ably enough
with one of three tries a particularly fine effort scored by Ian 'Jumbo' James.
Showing a surprising turn of speed, including a side step along the way, the hooker
ran thirty metres to score following a line-out. Other try-scorers were
prop Treve 'Tank' Williams and speedy centre Richard Harris. Full-back Anthony
Stevenson kicked the one conversion Pirates - Anthony Stevenson, Dan Fisher,

25th. November, 2006
This was
another closely contested Merit Table game, the "Cherry & Whites"
proving very able opponents. Lock Mike Grieg was outstanding in the Pirates eight,
whilst Andrew Snell, playing out of position at scrum-half, acquitted himself
very well. Indeed, he crossed the line for one of the two tries scored by the
Pirates in the match, the other coming from powerhouse prop Treve 'Tank' Williams. Pirates
- Ed Skewes, Danny Hewett, Anthony Stevenson, Tom McFadden, Kevin Walsh, Nathan
Glinski, Andrew Snell, Tom Ball, Matt Pascoe, Wayne Davey, Ian Butterworth, Mike

2nds 31 Camborne 3rds 19 - 11th. November, 2006 Playing this 'friendly'
at the Mennaye Field, the Pirates were deservedly victorious in an entertaining
game of rugby football. Included in their line-up was centre 'Mitch' Holmes,
a member of the club's successful Colts team a few years back, who made a welcome
return. Scorers - tries: Treve Williams, Dave Lawrence, Tom McFadden,
Ed Skewes, Dan Fisher; cons: Nathan Glinski (3). Team - Ed Skewes,

St. Ives 2nds 41 - Pirates 2nds 22 This was a Cornish Merit Table game which
provided plenty of entertainment, much enjoyed by those watching, though there
was disappointment for the visiting league leaders who lost their unbeaten record.
The Pirates were stronger at the set piece, but in loose play St. Ives,
making good use of South African centre Werner Gaigher, were just a little too
sharp for them. Scorers:-
St. Ives - tries: R. Bishop (2), A.
Lawton (2), M. Sherais, W., Gaigher; penalty try; cons: M. Bassett (3).

- tries: T. Williams (2), A. Gwennap, D. Pascoe; con: N. Glinski. Pirates

Friendly
v Helston 7th. October
Last Saturday, the 7th. October, the team played
a 'friendly' away against Helston 1st. XV, taking the opportunity to give other
members of the squad a run out. That the match was lost 19-0 was no disgrace,
but the side was disrupted in the first half when prop Zac Scott had to depart
with a dislocated shoulder. His replacement, Mark Blewett, had no boots, so the
ingenious response was to take loan of poor old Zac's size 9s whilst he was still
under anaesthetic on the changing rooms table! Also, spare a thought for Scott
Dugdale, who often plays on the wing, but volunteered to play at hooker - by Tuesday,
still aching, he realised it was an unwise move.
As for Helston, they clearly
deserved their win, but were taken aback pre-match when it was announced that
Gavin Tackle was at scrum-half for the Pirates team, one of their number hearing
it as Gavin Cattle, who is skipper, of course, of the Cornish Pirates. Pirates
v Helston - Martin Bodilly, Tom McFadden, Nick Rees, Des O'Connell, Chris Wood,

a tough encounter, with no quarter given by either side. The Reds
got off to a better start, going 12-0 up before the Pirates came back within two
points of their opponents by the break. The lead changed hands several times
during the second period, the Pirates ultimately sneaking a narrow victory in
a most entertaining contest. Tries for the Pirates were scored by No. 8
