Pirates U17s 12 Wimborne U17s 20 16th
March, 2008 Travelling with just 14 players to this South-West National
Bowl semi-final match on Sunday, the Pirates competed extremely well at the neutral
Ivybridge venue. Their pack was in particularly good form, winning
all the loose ball and driving Wimborne back in the scrums, but overall it was
inevitable that the Dorset team's numerical advantage would ultimately see them
through. The Pirates scored two fine tries in the match, the first for full-back
Kelvin James following a weaving break from his own '22' by scrum-half Trevelyan
Dugdale, and the second for wing Josh Rule who finished off a fine passing movement
with a try in the corner. Pirates U17s: K. James, J. Rule, J. Oliver, J.
Semmens, D. Batten, H. Mander, T. Dugdale (capt), T. Cowan-Dickie, G. Bodilly,

rugby in the first half, with Falmouth then responding themselves in the second

Okehampton
Colts 26 Pirates Colts 5 12th January, 2008 Travelling with
just 11 players due to injuries and college commitments, the Pirates were grateful
to their hosts for providing a front-row and a scrum-half. This was a match
played in great spirit, with open running rugby the order of the day. Centres
Josh Semmens and Josh Oliver were in fine form, breaking the gain line with nearly
every touch of the ball, and the back-row tackled their hearts out, with big games
from Ryan Stanley and Gareth Bodilly. The one try for the Pirates was scored by
the guest scrum-half. On Sunday, Josh Oliver and Trevelyan Dugdale played
for Cornwall U17s away to Bath, the match drawn 17-all This coming Saturday
the Pirates Colts are away to Falmouth in the Cup.
Pirates
U17s 29 Falmouth U17s 5 8th. December, 2007 This cup match
game played on the Mennaye Nurseries field was fast and free flowing from start
to finish, despite the poor weather conditions. Henry Mander controlled the game
well at fly-half and was rewarded with a try which was converted by full-back
Kelvin James. Lock Jamie Barrett and prop Danny Toolan were two guest players
from the U16s, Danny scoring a fine try with a run in from 30 metres. Gareth Bodilly
was outstanding in the back-row, as was Tom Cowan-Dickie who scored a hat-trick
of tries. Pirates U17s: K. James, D. Smith, J. Rule, J. Semmens, D. Batten,
H. Mander, T. Dugdale (capt), T. Cowan-Dickie, J. Oliver, G. Bodilly, K. Trewhella,
J. Barrett, D. Penrose, S. Richards, D. Toolan. Replacements: R. Farley
and R. Stanley. Scorers - tries: Cowan-Dickie (3), Mander, Toolan; cons:

Hayle
Colts 0 Pirates Colts 58 10th. November, 2007 Forget
the one-sided scoreline, this was still a match played in great spirit, the Pirates
also lending three players to Hayle to provide all present with a game of rugby.
A pleasing aspect for the winners, was that the good work being done in training
was clearly there to be seen, the sound line-out work and driving play especially
evident. Pirates Colts:
K. James, D. Batten, J. Oliver, J. Semmens,
J. Rule, H. Mander, T. Dugdale (capt), P. Thornton, Steve
G. Bodilly, K. Trewhella,
W. Maplethorp, D. Penrose, R. Stanley, T. Cowan-Dickie.
Replacement (all used)
- J. Nicholas, D. Smith, R. Farley. Scorers - tries: Cowan-Dickie (3), Dugdale,
Mander, Semmens, Oliver, Batten, James; cons: Dugdale (2), James, Cowan-Dickie.
Pirates Colts 22 Newquay Colts 5 Saturday 20th.
October, 2007 This was an excellent win for the developing Pirates Colts,
their young pack outplaying bigger opponents and enabling them to provide the
possession which led to two tries being scored by full-back Aaron Hall, and one
for wing Josh Rule. Fly-half Kelvin James kicked a penalty and two conversions. Pirates
Colts:
A. Hall, J. Rule, H. Lewis, J. Oliver, A. Chessen, K. James, T. Dugdale
(capt), G. Pye, P. Thornton, G. Bodilly, A. White, D. Batten, D. Penrose, R. Stanley,
D. Toolan. Pirates Colts 10 Wadebridge Colts 22 Saturday
13th. October, 2007 The young Pirates played some excellent rugby in
the first half to arrive at the interval 10-3 up. Both backs and forwards had
linked well, with all of their points scored by fly-half Kelvin James. To their
credit, however, the visitors came back strongly in the second half, their replacements
making a considerable impact to help turn the game around and prevent the Pirates
from scoring again. Pirates Colts:
G. Bodilly, S. Richards, J. Rule,
J. Oliver, D. Batten, K. James, T. Dugdale (capt), B. Noyce, P. Thornton, G. Pye,
W. Maplethorp, R. Farley, D. Penrose, R. Stanley, J. Batten. Scorers - try:
James; con: James; pen: James. Truro Colts 36 Pirates
Colts 15 29th. September, 2007 Despite losing the services
of lock Will Maplethorp with a shoulder injury after just a quarter of an hour,
the spirited Pirates still led 12-10 at half-time, having scored two tries through
prop Gareth Bodilly and wing Aaron Hall, one converted by full-back Kelvin James. Having
to play with just 14 men was always likely to take its toll, and although every
Pirates player gave their all, it was perhaps no surprise that Truro finished
the game strongly to ultimately record a comfortable victory. Pirates Colts:
K. James, A. Hall, J. Semmens, J. Oliver, J. Rule, H. Mander, T. Dugdale (capt),
G. Pye, T. Cowan-Dickie, K. Trewhella, B. Batchelor, W. Maplethorp, D. Batten,
R. Stanley, G. Bodilly. Scorers - tries: Bodilly, Hall; con: James; pen:
James.
Penryn Colts 22 Pirates Colts 3 Saturday
15th. September, 2007 After just one full training session the Pirates
Colts, skippered by scrum-half Trevelyan Dugdale, acquitted themselves well against
a strong Penryn side. Coach Wayne Davey was delighted with the commitment
and team spirit shown, which bodes well for the future, with special commendation
to Danny Toolan and Chris Butler from the Pirates U16s. Fly-half Kelvin
James kicked their one penalty goal in the match. Training
sessions take place on Thursdays 7pm on the Mennaye Nurseries field. Pirates

Charlie Armstrong In
Ireland Under 18s Team
Dublin-born Charlie Charlie Armstrong has had
a successful and enjoyable introduction to international rugby playing for Ireland
U18s and winning four caps as a lock.
 |
Charlie,
formerly head boy of Mounts Bay School and currently studying at Truro College,
is a product of the Pirates mini-juniors and has played for both the colts and
the Cornish Pirates Academy side. Charlie's first outing
for Ireland was a friendly played at New Anniesland, Glasgow, against Scotland
(won 10-6), followed by three matches played in the European Championships in
France during April.against Georgia (won 33-0), England (won 10-7), and France
(drew 8-all). The match against France in the final of
the competition played at Dax, was decided by a penalty shoot-out with France
winning by 4 kicks to 3. To play for his country as an 'exile'
Irishman was an amazing experience, Charlie is already looking forward to next
season when he hopes to play for Truro College in the Daily Mail Cup competition
before gunning for a place once more in the Irish U18s team. |

Colts 34 Newquay Colts 21
Sunday 22nd. April, 2007 Competing
at Hayle on the Cornwall U18s Cup Finals Day, the Pirates Colts played Newquay
in the Shield competition for third and fourth place. At the start the Hornets
looked the slightly stronger of the two teams, but playing with immense determination
the Pirates began to slowly wear their opponents down. They were 21-19 ahead at
the break, pack power important as they took further control in the second period
to go on and secure a deserved victory. Try-scorers for the Pirates were
Aaron Benton (2), Ben Taylor, Robert Heath and Craig Stevens. Nick Hichens kicked
3 conversions and a penalty. Pirates Colts 23 Truro

Saturday 17th. March, 2007 The Pirates put in a
first-class display in this important cup match, having complete control of the
game. Yes, they had beaten Truro in the away encounter, but it was still thought
that would be a closely fought contest. Tries were scored by Aaron Benton, Jacob
Cody, Steve Bryant and Nick Hichens, the latter also slotting a penalty. The
Pirates Colts next match will be played on Saturday week, opposition and venue
to be confirmed. Newquay Colts 10 Pirates Colts 33
Saturday 3rd. March, 2007 In wet and muddy conditions the Pirates
Colts still played some surprisingly good entertaining rugby, the try scorers

Saturday 10th. February The Pirates, although missing
six of their regular squad, might well have won this game. Their forwards
played particularly well in the first half, but the team was simply not able to
take sufficient advantage of acquired possession, scoring just the one try in
the match through full-back Dan McKee. Falmouth Colts

Saturday 3rd. February, 2007 This was
not a classic match, as one-sided contests often prove to be, the young Pirates
perhaps guilty of not scoring more points with the amount of chances they created. Scorers

2nd. December, 2006
Travelling their
longest journey in Cornwall to play a Colts match, the Pirates took a while before
they found their rhythm, with Bude also defending well in the early stages. However,
once Robert Lockwood crossed for the first of seven tries scored in the match,
a good team effort saw the game won with ease. Scorers:- tries: Robert Lockwood,
Robert Heath, Jack Eddy, Aaron Hall, Ben Taylor, Aaron Benton, Nick Hitchens;
