U16s Win International Festival Shield

Congratulations are due the Pirates U16s for journeying to Ireland and winning the Shield trophy in an Irish International Rugby Festival held at Midleton RFC, Cork.

Despite playing the first half of this final both into the elements and uphill, the Pirates still dominated events and were unlucky not to score when Talan Daniels was adjudged to have put a foot in touch. After the turnaround, the Pirates went close to scoring once more, before Barnsley mounted an attack and pressed deep inside the Pirates half.

It was important that the Cornish team's defence held firm, which it thankfully did, and when breaking free a fluent threequarter movement was finished off with a try scored out wide by Kial Richards. Ollie Rowe added the difficult conversion. Now playing with a spring in their step, one more try followed, it this time scored by lock Josh Roberts.

The Pirates U16s had thoroughly enjoyed their tour, and were delighted to return safely to Cornwall with deservedly acquired silverware.

'Barbarians' - Talan & Dean

Two members of the Pirates U16s were selected to play for the Cornish Barbarians in a Cornwall Clubs U18s 'Seven-a-Side' competition held at Newquay on Easter Sunday.

Talan Daniels and Dean Fry were in the team which made it through to the semi-finals of the Shield competition, where they were beaten by Wadebridge Camels.

Pirates 10 v Camborne 10

The Pirates welcomed Camborne to the Mennaye Field last Wednesday to play a mid-week cup match under floodlights, the strong visitors starting off with a good spell of rugby before the Pirates forwards began to dominate the scrums and line-outs. Applying pressure in the Camborne half, scrum-half Ed Hosking passed to his half-back partner Samuel Stevens who was successful with a drop kick attempt to put the first score on the board.

Continuing to pressurise the Camborne line, due efforts were rewarded when Kail Richards crossed the line following a well worked line-out, the try to end the half converted by Danny Toolan.

Camborne re-grouped at half-time and slowly started to apply pressure through their three-quarters, which resulted in them scoring two unconverted tries to draw the game at 10-all.

Both sides had played a good standard rugby in a competitive match, and after a slow start to the season the Pirates U16s are now undefeated in their last three matches.

Playing flowing rugby, tries from Ben Cluny, full-back Adam Moore and skipper Jamie Barrett put the Pirates 15-0 up at the break.

The home team continued to dominate also in the second half, their win ultimately sealed thanks to three more five-point scores from Neal Hosking, Ollie Monk, and Talan Daniels.

Helston U16s 22 Pirates U16s 20

Early domination by the Pirates was rewarded with a try scored by Chris Butler, and then one for Ben Cluny following good work by fly-half Ollie Rowe. Helston hit back with a try of their own before Cluny then crossed the line for his second try of the game.

Sam Turner powered his way over for the Pirates fourth try of the match midway through the second half, but when the scrums had to stay uncontested after the Pirates were reduced to 14 men because of injury, some clever ball handling by the home team saw them score three unanswered tries, the final conversion sealing their narrow victory.
