Open
Evening
Friday March 14th The Pirates Youth rugby
section's Open Evening held a couple of weeks ago demonstrated just how supportive
the younger members' parents and others can be. Club President Robin
Turner spoke to outline just how crucial parent's involvement is, to the continuing
success of not only Pirates rugby, but County and National rugby too. Commenting
afterwards, he said "Believe it or not, it is the parents of our younger
players who might hold the future of England rugby in their hands. With the right
parental support we can offer a quality rugby experience. Without it, our younger
players' expectations are not met and they might consider other sports. As the
youngsters start as early as 6 years old, support in the very early years is crucial." The
Open Evening yielded a further 5 possible volunteers for coaching and other volunteer
support. What came as a great bonus however was a further possible 5 or 6 referees.
Tony Richards, a qualified volunteer referee with one of the Pirates minis
sides said "We were astounded with the level of interest. Referees can
make a significant contribution to the player's development as they can help them
understand the often complex rules of rugby union, at an early age. Also, without
referees at the junior level of the game (U13 - U15), then there simply would
not be games for these youngsters."

Section Secretary, Wendy Nicholas added "Whilst we
are hugely grateful to the numbers that came to support us at the Open Evening,
there are still some crucial positions we would like to fill. Two crucial roles
vacant at present are section Chairman & Volunteer Coordinator. The RFU recognise
the value of all volunteers and offer a wide variety of support for anyone wishing
to become involved or find out more." Anyone who feels they can
offer support to the Pirates mini/junior section may contact Wendy on 01736 871835
