In blustery conditions, the Pirates Colts produced a spirited performance in this Cornwall Knock-Out Cup plate final played at Hayle.

At full-time the sides were level at 10-all, but the Pirates were declared the winners by scoring two tries to Falmouth's one.

At the start of the game the Falmouth forwards dominated the set-piece, and created the pressure from where they kicked an early penalty on offer.

The Pirates came back into the game thanks to good tactical kicking by fly-half Trevelyan Dugdale and full-back Kelvin James, and with their pack gaining confidence turnover ball was won which led to an unconverted try scored in the corner by James.

Despite having the elements in their favour, the Pirates started the second half sluggishly and lost their lead when Falmouth scored a converted try at the posts.

As in the first half, the Pirates managed to respond with their forward effort well led by No. 8 Tom Cowan-Dickie. Driving his drove his pack down the middle of the field, quick ball was then made available to fly-half Trevelyan Dugdale who sold a dummy, sidestepped his opposite number and ran thirty yards to score a brilliant individual try. The conversion was again missed.

With pressure mounting, handling errors from both teams cost them any further scoring opportunities, but it mattered not for the Pirates. When the referee blew the final whistle it was they who were declared victors for scoring two tries to Falmouth's one, the rules of the competition stating that no extra time was to be played.

The coaching staff of Treve Stirling, Paul Quayle, Scott Dugdale and Andrew Snell said this was a well deserved achievement for the Pirates Colts who have been beaten only twice all season.
