Pirates Colts 38 Liskeard-Looe Colts 10
Saturday 28th March, 2009
The Pirates Colts earned their place in the Cornwall Cup Final by defeating Liskeard-Looe convincingly at the Mennaye Field on Saturday.
Kicking the game off, and with the wind at their backs, the Pirates scored an early try after a well rehearsed backs move resulted in centre Josh Oliver running 30 yards for a try at the posts. Full-back Kelvin James added the conversion.
As the half developed the home pack took a stranglehold on the game and dominated the set piece. This led to a second try by man of the match Jamie Barrett, who crashed over in the corner.
Using the wind to their advantage, after another slick backs move Oliver scored his second try, which was quickly followed by a third of the match, scored by prop Danny Toolan. James added both conversions.
Against the run of play Liskeard-Looe managed to score a breakaway try through James Leonard, but the Pirates hit back when wing Talan Daniels scored another converted try following a long kick downfield by James.
Because they had to play into a strong wind in the second half, the Pirates opted to keep the ball tight and kick sensibly for position, and they finished the game off in style with a fine try scored by flanker Kyle Richards.
Leonard crossed for his second try of the match in the dying seconds, but it was the Pirates who soon celebrated their place in the final. Coaches Treve Stirling and Paul Quayle were delighted for their players, who had been rewarded for their efforts.
