March 2009 U16s Pirates 40 St. Ives 0 Played
at the Mennaye on a sunny but cold springlike morning, the Pirates faced a slightly
weakened St. Ives XV, who were missing their injured county speedster Tom Chandler.
Perhaps a little complacent about their opponents
at the start of the game, the Pirates had to work hard for their first try, scored
by prop Jack Lugg and converted by Kyle Moyle. The remainder of the half was also
well contested, until good defence by the Pirates backs led to a loose ball being
kicked ahead for centre William Banks to touch down for another converted score
to give a 14-0 half-time lead. The second half began with
a change in Pirates personnel, as some of the more regular starters were introduced,
and after eight minutes full-back Andrew Tester made a fine run down the wing
to score. In the final quarter the Pirates began to fully
find their rhythm, and further tries followed through fly-half Ben Brooks, centre
Jack Nowell and lock Charlie Tokeley. Pirates Squad:

Lugg, Sam Cartwright, Matthew Richards, Charlie Tokeley, Jonathan Badcock, Ben

Honours were shared on a glorious
day at Alexandra Road, as two evenly matched sides scored one try apiece. The
Pirates had rested a number of their regular players for this encounter, so a
much more even game had been anticipated. Having the better of the first
half, the Pirates scored a try through number 8 Asher Richards. However, St Ives
came back strongly and countered with a try of their own before the interval,
it following a good forward drive. In the second half St Ives took the
game to the Pirates, but could not break through their defensive line. The tackling
from a team where a number of players played out of position was excellent, with
congratulations to Josh Rochell who was making his Pirates debut. Pirates

on the Mennaye Nurseries field, with the Pirates far from disgraced in going down
against a strong and skilful 'Cherry & Whites' team Tries for the Pirates

and stand-in scrum-half Rory Osborne. Jordan Nicholls and Matthew Skewes kicked
