February 2009 Pirates U16s 64 Camborne U16s 0
Playing
this home match at the Mennaye Field in the seventh round of the Cup, this was
expected to be a tight encounter as Camborne, like the Pirates, had overcome all
their rivals in the earlier rounds, with the exception of Truro. Although
a little heavy underfoot, conditions were still much improved than was witnessed
in previous weeks, and for perhaps the first time this season the Pirates were
also able to field their full starting line-up. Having had all their matches side-lined
for the past month due to the weather, and both St Ives and St Austell conceding
their matches, the Pirates were hungry from the outset. Having
not played for a month, the Pirates were hungry for action, with the tone of the
match set in the very first minute through a barnstorming run from skipper Luke
Cowan-Dickie, who then off-loaded to Cartwright to score under the posts. It was
a start from which Camborne never recovered, and minutes later the Pirates were
on the scoreboard again with a try from hooker John Drew. The
sheer power of the Pirates' pack was awesome, and combined with the speed and
skilful play in the backs, the outcome was inevitable. Further first half tries
for the Pirates were scored by Cowan-Dickie (2), William Banks (2) and Kyle Moyle,
to give the Pirates an unassailable 43-0 half-time lead. To
their credit, the spirited Camborne players were determined to see the match out,
and put a hold on the surge for much of the second half. However, a Pirates team
that now introduced several changes, scored three more tries through Moyle (2)
and Ben Britten to close the match at 64-0. This was perhaps
the most accomplished display to date this season by this Pirates team, and in
parts the standard of rugby was such that many senior sides would have been proud
of. Pirates Squad: Jack Lugg, John Drew, Sam Cartwright, Keiran Brownfield,
Charlie Tokeley, Ben Britten, Ben Robinson, Luke Cowan-Dickie (capt), Taylor Wearne,

15th February, 2009 Last Sunday saw
Helston at home to their counterparts from Penzance & Newlyn, with the visitors
posting a sound eight tries to nil victory. After a long lay-off from
rugby, because of poor pitch and weather conditions, the young Pirates were glad
of a game and thankful to Helston for giving them the opportunity to start playing
again. In the first half there was a great deal of rustiness from both sides,
but with the advantage of the school pitch slope the Pirates soon put some phases
together and scored some tries. The first try was scored by Lockran Williams
and converted by Sam Coogan, with there another try that quickly followed wide
out from No. 8 Ed Holmes. When the forwards found their feet, the team started
to play as a unit and Williams soon completed his hat-trick, whilst there was
also a first half try scored by man-of- the-match Tom Holdsworth. After
the turnaround it was evident that the Helston coach had a few strong words to
say his team, as the tackling was a great deal better and their all round game
was much improved. When the Helston full-back left the field injured, both teams
played with 14 men in a game that now opened up considerably. Fly-half
Sam Coogan started to orchestrate play for the Pirates, and three more good tries
were scored. Williams was firstly over again with a great burst of speed from
the base of the scrum, and then Tom Holdsworth performed a trademark kick ahead
and follow up to score. Finally, forward Sam Skinner powered over the line from
five metres out to complete the Pirates tally. There were other try-scoring
opportunities created in the final minutes, but the Pirates were denied due to
some brave tackling from Helston's fly-half. He firstly hauled down Pirates' skipper
Oliver Hallworth, who was making a welcome return to action after having six weeks
off with illness, and then brought to ground Holdsworth as he looked to crash
over the line At the end, the Pirates were simply delighted to be back playing,
and had been especially grateful for a game ahead of their U13s Cornwall KO Cup
competition clash with Wadebridge which takes place at home this coming Sunday. Hayle

The Pirates U11s were in good form and played
some fine rugby in a free flowing game of rugby. Coaches Rob and Ozzy thanked
two of their squad, Charlie and Jake, for agreeing to play for the home side who
were missing a number of players because of injury. Tries for the Pirates
U11s were scored by Noah, Charlie, Nick, Ryan, Rory, Jordan and Liam. Conversions
were kicked by Matthew (2), Liam (2), and Jordan. Hayle

Favourable weather assured a healthy squad
turn out at Hayle on Sunday morning, with a good game ensuing between two evenly
matches sides. Passing and tackling skills were impressive on a day when
the Pirates emerged narrow, but deserved winners. Pirates U9s: Henry Trow
(capt), Thomas Prosser, James Lambourn, Matthew Ellis, Chris Dodd, Peter Williams,
Max Walden, Sabian Friggens, Conner George, Tom Tieken, Alfie Hall, Daniel Rhys
Evans. Try-scorers: Matthew Ellis, Conner George, Tom Tieken and Daniel

On an unusually drier morning than of late, the Pirates travelled to
Hayle with an almost full squad, the majority of whom had also supported the 'Scalextric
Challenge' held at 'Westholme' the previous day. In an initially evenly
matched contest, the Pirates narrowly led by four tries to three at half-time.
However, in the second half, with excellent tagging, some superb running and passing,
they were able to stretch their lead and win well because of a great team performance. Pirates
U8s: Morgan Harvey, Declan Marshall, Daniel Tucker, William Simons, Mackenzie

In
near perfect rugby conditions, Hayle and the Pirates U 7s tried to replicate the
national side's commitment to play with ferocious tagging and decisive support
play. Both sides were also evenly matched throughout, until in the last five minutes
of the game the Pirates finished in clinical fashion to score two unanswered tries
which guaranteed them victory. Pirates U7s: Frank Adams, Ben Durrant, Harris
Eddy, Finley Gray-Williams, Jacob Gwennap, Tom Hands, Tyler Kearney, Thomas Morice,
