'Active Penwith Sports Awards 2009' at St. John's Hall, Penzance on Friday
13th March. There was a great turn out at St. John's
Hall for the presentations to recognise the contribution sport has made to the
community, with participants and volunteers rewarded for their sporting achievements
and services to sport. In total, there were 13 different
categories which represented teams, clubs and individuals from the Penwith area
for the period 1st January - 31st December 2008. Ben
Robinson, who plays for the Pirates U16s, won the 'Young Sports Leader of the
Year' award for his efforts at Mounts Bay School, whilst senior player Wayne Davey
won the 'Sportsman of the Year' award.
Wayne, who lives
in Newlyn, was one of the rowers that last summer made an attempt to cross the Atlantic
from New York to the Bishop Rock. The aim of Wayne and
his compatriots was to beat the record for a four-person crew of 55 days and 13
hours, but their brave effort was thwarted when their vessel capsized in high
winds and poor visibility, 650 miles from the coast of America and just 13 days
after setting off from New York. A TV re-enactment, , on BBC2 left us mere mortals dumbfounded as to the perilous
danger endured before Wayne, who is a paramedic and a crew member
aboard the Penlee Lifeboat, has captained the Pirates 'Amateurs' in recent seasons,
and also featured for the Cornish Pirates in their 'Super Cup' games played in
2008. Three other 'Pirates' were also shortlisted for awards, Luke Cowan-Dickie
(Pirates and England U16s), local sporting stalwart Nicky Brooks, and Wendy Nicholas
(Youth Rugby official). |
