May 24th 2010 The Penzance & Newlyn RFC's Youth Section recently held its awards evening, Wendy Nicholas, youth chair, thanked all those that made rugby possible for over 200 members aged from 6 to 18.
Wendy praised the tremendous dedication of a superb team of coaches, ably supported by team managers, parents and ground staff, who together have enabled the section to enjoy another successful season. She thanked all the businesses and individuals who have provided financial support, or have allowed use of certain facilities, and there was also praise for the Cornish Pirates players, led by Alan Paver, who have been attending many training and social events during the past year. Looking back on the season, it was highlighted that 130 matches were hosted at the Mennaye Field and Mennaye Nurseries grounds, with more than 2,500 post match meals being served by volunteers to the children. A number of Cornish Pirates players were present at the awards evenings, whilst both the President and the Chairman of Penzance & Newlyn RFC, Robin Turner and Sid Thomas, attended the Junior evening, where they presented the 'Junior Team of the Year' and the 'Junior Player of the Year' awards respectively.
