Cardiff Social XV 48 Pirates Amateurs 4
Saturday 10th April 2010
Travelling from Penzance to Cardiff on Friday, the Pirates Amateurs then played a thoroughly entertaining evening game of rugby against a Cardiff Social XV.
Captaining the hosts was Chad James, who had a number of other former 'Pirates' in his line-up, namely Craig Blewett, Jamie Eddy and Paul Jones. Joff Collins also acted as their water boy.
The match was played at St. Peter's RFC, where the order of the day was to play open running rugby. At times it resembled the seven-a-side version of the game, and plenty of points were inevitable in match where the lead also changed hands on several occasions.
The pick of the Pirates were youngsters Chris Butler and Danny Toolan, along with veteran lock Dave Lawrence . Dave put in some great runs and bone-crunching tackles, the pick of them one on his old team mate Chad.
Rugby over, it was then down to the business end of the tour – a night in Cardiff, followed on Saturday with a day at the races. A visit to Chepstow racecourse was enjoyed by all, where the wearing of cravats, tweed jackets and flat caps was a must.
On Sunday, after another good evening in Cardiff, it was a return home via Weston-Super-Mare, with there a fantastic mix of fancy-dress on display. Unfortunately for Andrew Snell and Eric Quick, both were fined for having chosen the same 'Dennis the Menace' costumes, which they would regret. Their punishment was to hold hands for a number of hours, which not only provided a spectacle, but also made heads turn when they were spotted on the seafront!
