Hayle 38 Pirates Amateurs 46
17th April 2010
A late burst of scoring from youngsters Kyle Moyle and Jack Nowell gave the Amateurs a victory that looked to have slipped their grasp.
Wing Moyle scored an impressive four tries in an entertaining see-saw of a match, whilst there was hat-trick for scrum-half Nowell.
The Lions opened the scoring, but the Pirates soon hit back and took the lead when Moyle crossed for his first two tries.
Hayle pulled three points back with a penalty, and then went ahead with a converted try, only for Nowell to level matters with his first score following a powerful drive to the line by prop Danny Lugg.
From the restart, Lugg's front-row propping partner Mark Blewett made a strong midfield carry, and when the ball was moved right Moyle jinked and then sped away to register his hat-trick.
Fly-half Murray Westren added the conversion and Hayle soon after landed a penalty to make it 18-22 at the break.
No. 8 Scott Powell increased the Pirates lead with a try early in the second half, but Hayle then came back and appeared to be taking command when two converted tries and a penalty suddenly put them 35-27 up.
The Pirates needed to respond, and after Westren's lofted 'bomb' looked to test volcanic ash levels, Nowell followed up the kick to run in a try converted by Moyle.
A successful Hayle penalty opened up a four points lead for the home side, but the fitness and sharpness of the Amateurs then told, with Nowell's hat-trick and then Moyle's fourth try, which he also converted, proving decisive at the end.
