Pirates Amateurs 5-50 Redruth Development
Saturday 5th September 2009
Despite being short of certain playing personnel, the Pirates Amateurs still honoured a tough Merit Table fixture against a strong Redruth Development XV in this game played at the Mennaye Field on Saturday.
The Pirates started the match in style, skipper Sam Heath selling an excellent dummy and kicking ahead to enable wing Danny Hewett to cross for a try in the old Western National corner of the ground. However, Redruth hit back almost immediately when they scored from a catch and drive.
It was felt likely that the Pirates would struggle against strong and able opponents, but they refused to buckle early on, defended well, and with the pack putting in a really good performance held the 'Reds' to a 5-17 points half-time scoreline.
Unfortunately, in the second half the pressure almost inevitably told, enabling the visitors to use their young and speedy backs, who ran in five tries after Heath had been sent off for repeatedly infringing.
