Pirates Amateurs Rfc 0 St.Ives Reserves 20
5th Dec 2009
The newly formed Pirates Amateurs RFC may have lost this friendly match played at home to s strong St. Ives Reserves team, but the good news received in the week was that the county's clubs had voted by a majority to grant the Amateurs affiliation to the Cornwall RFU.
This was welcome news, based on sporting and common sense, with hard working representatives expressing appreciation to those who had supported them.
As for the rugby played on another wet Saturday afternoon at the Mennaye Field, it was a real local derby match with neither side willing to take a backward step. However, extra experience in the St.Ives pack was bound to count, enabling their equally able backs to take advantage of.
St. Ives scored three unconverted first half tries through Ian Sanders, Stuart Turnbull and Neil Corin, the latter's dotted down after he collected a great cross kick from Ian Veal.
In the second half the Pirates upped their defensive effort, with youngsters Sam Stevens, James Nicholls and Danny Toolan earning the plaudits.
St. Ives were denied a further score until late in the half, when the flying 'chippy', Heamoor fryer Ian Sanders, crossed at the clubhouse corner.
