Pirates U14s 22 Penryn U14s 5 8 th Nov 2009 Having lost to Penryn in last year’s County Cup competition, this eagerly awaited return match against a strong and disciplined side did not disappoint. The Pirates were determined to settle unfinished business from the kick-off, and went about their work with a passion and enthusiasm that had been lacking in recent games. Playing against a strong wind towards the Penzance end of the Mennaye Field, the forwards took the game straight to Penryn and began early domination of their pack. The aggression in the tight proved successful, placing Penryn on the back foot for most of the first half and enabling two well constructed tries to be scored by back-rowers Tom Holdsworth and Sam Skinner. Penryn rallied early in the second half, and were rewarded with a good try. However, this was their final burst of pressure as half-backs Treeve Polglase and Ollie Hallworth began to use the strong wind to their advantage, implementing a decisive kicking campaign which pinned Penryn back in their own half on numerous occasions. Good forward work and an aggressive pick and drive resulted in another try from Holdsworth who has recently moved from centre to number eight – a position that appears to suit him very well, and a final surge and a well taken ball by prop Ben Martin enabled him to storm over the line to secure the victory. Special mention must go to referee Tony Richards who controlled a game full of emotion from both players and supporters. Pirates scorers – tries: Holdsworth (2), Skinner, Martin; con: Hallworth.
