U14s 'Warm Up' In Convincing Style Helston U14s 21 Pirates U14s 52 Viewed as a warm up for their forthcoming second round of the County Cup next week, the young Pirates travelled to Helston on Sunday eager for a run out after a long period of games cancelled because of bad weather. Fielding a development squad and lending two players to a depleted Helston side, the Pirates opened up an early lead with a good try from winger Billy Read. Helston responded well as each team began to probe each other with good attacking drives, whilst both also displayed equally strong defensive skills. However, after a swift four phase move by the Pirates pack, forward Sam Vernon drove over the line to notch up another try. The 0-10 score prompted Helston into action and they responded with a good try of their own, and then another before the interval following a tremendous break by their backs. Both tries were converted which gave the home side a 14-10 points lead. After several strategic changes to the squad the Pirates began to dominate in the second period, and they took the lead after Tom Lambourn identified a gap to score and put the Pirates back in front. Two further tries were scored through Luke McFadden and Sam Beamish to make it 14-25, and following a cross field kick from centre Olly Hallworth, winger McFadden was able to pass inside to Treve Polglase who crossed for another. From the restart, forward Sam Skinner made a superb break from the half-way line to score a memorable try in the corner, before Helston began to fight back with good rucking skills that provided ball for the backs to notch up their final points with a converted try. After the Pirates coaches made further substitutions, Tom Holdsworth crossed for a try converted by fly-half Sam Coogan, and in the dying minutes tries from Jack Mankin and a second from Sam Skinner completed the scoring. This has been a really memorable game of rugby, played with great conviction and comradeship by both sides. Special mention must go to the two sporting Pirates, Ben Martin and Hamish Jeffrey, who elected to play for Helston to equal the numbers. Scorers - tries: Skinner (2), Read, Beamish, Holdsworth, Lambourn, Richards, McFadden, Polglase, Mankin; con: Coogan.
