Penzance & Newlyn RFC's youth section is a thriving group of over 200 members – all keen to play rugby and with many holding the ultimate dream to one day play for the Cornish Pirates, in the Premiership.

The younger groups all play for fun with dedicated volunteers coaching them. As they reach the older groups it is more competitive and technical.

There is a Colts U18s team,and whilst the section finds that by coaching to such a high level at younger groups it results in many being snapped up by Truro & Exeter Academy, there are still those who choose to stay loyal to the Penzance & Newlyn club.

The Colts are currently coached by Cornish Pirates player Chris Morgan, who is assisted when possible by Sam Heath, but this is a crucial age group leading into senior rugby and more help is needed from people with a genuine interest in the future of the club and local players.

Mr Rod Coward, CEO of the Cornish Pirates, supports the ethos. He has commented:

“To help provide young, aspiring rugby players with the opportunity to succeed in their home town has to be a very rewarding, worthwhile thing to do.

Cornish Pirates will continue to assist where possible, but it’s the hands on commitment that will ultimately make the difference.”

Due to ever increasing playing numbers coaches are actually required in all teams from U13s up to Colts level. The commitment could be weekly or occasional, and it helps if one has played to a reasonable level. Support is also given with coaching courses etcetera.

The youth section is also looking for team managers for the U15s and the Colts, and if there is anyone willing to assist with occasional transport who holds a Cornwall Council mini bus licence, then this would also be a great help that can help.
