Cecil Dunn has passed away, aged 86.
By Phil Westren

A wide variety of people about the town of Penzance, including many Pirates, will be saddened to hear the news that Cecil Dunn has passed away, aged 86.

Born and bred in Penzance, and known to many as 'Cuz', which is a term he himself also used when addressing fellow Cornishmen, Cecil Raymond Dunn was proud of his roots.

Living by the sea was important to him, and it was on the sea that Cecil served his country so admirably, including participation in the D-Day landings and time on the Russian convoys during World War II.

He later received the Russian Convoy medal and was a collector for the Royal British Legion over a number of years.

The word 'service' marries closely to Cecil, as over the years his support and participation saw him involved with such as the Penzance Amateur Operatic Society, St. Mary's Church Choir, and the Marazion Apollo Choir.

He was also a passionate supporter and member of the League of Friends, the Penzance-Madron Scout Group, St. Mary's Church Cubs and, of course, the Penzance & Newlyn RFC.

A self-employed painter and decorator, who was also a qualified first-aider, it was in these areas that Cecil was first able to give serious support to the Pirates from the late 1970s.

He became the club's buildings maintenance officer and on match days helped various teams as a first-aider. Chairman from 1984-1990, he also held the esteemed office of President from 1990-1993. A late brother, Sid, was also a keen supporter and committee man.

Cecil's had a great interest in all things Cornish, and especially in relation to Penzance and area.

Old photographs provided curiosity and he always had an amusing story to tell, often using Cornish dialect.

Condolences are expressed to Cecil's wife Opre and family, including sons Jamie and Patrick who are both keen supporters of the Pirates.

His funeral will be a cremation service for family only, to be held at Treswithian Downs Crematorium, Camborne, on Thursday 24th November at 3pm.

Donations in Cecil's memory are requested for the League of Friends.
