The death of Hugh Martin has occurred at the age of 89.

Though not a player, he still holds a unique place in the history of the Pirates, having designed the superb Penzance & Newlyn RFC badge in 1946.

Hugh was clearly a very modest man, the fact remaining all but a secret until 1995 when the former hairdresser and hotelier was given a belated official thank-you in the form of an inscribed plaque presented by the then President of the Pirates, Mr. Henry Care.

The badge is very distinct, being used for a variety of needs over the years – blazer badges, merit ties, car stickers, posters, etcetera.

Many items have been sent worldwide and many thousands have been proud to be associated with the club through it. Indeed, even though the first team of the club is now called the Cornish Pirates, the honour awards still bear the original badge designed by Hugh.

Hugh leaves his wife Peggy and three sons, many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

His funeral took place in the Chapel at Penzance Cemetery
Friday 24th. March, 2006.
