Mary Hoare, a passionate and hard working supporter of Penzance & Newlyn RFC over many years, has passed away.
Mary, who enjoyed celebrating her 90th birthday last October, was a Life Member and Vice President of the club, which speaks volumes with regard to her association and input given.
It was no surprise that rugby played a big part in Mary's life from a young age. She had a sister but also eight brothers who all played for Newlyn RFC, and when aged 12 or 13 she would pay threepence to watch the team play at Newlyn's St. Goulder ground.
Fundraising was a role that Mary thrived participating in to provide support to the Pirates, whether it was helping at barbecues, harvest festivals, providing refreshments, running raffles, or organising coffee mornings. Her committee work was also considerable, and she proudly held office for a period as President of the Pirates Supporters' Club.
In her working life, Mary had spells working for the Western National bus office in Wherrytown, the Penzance Laundry office, and also for the DHSS from where she retired aged 60.
A spirited individual who was well liked by many and was always smartly attired, Mary's contribution to the Pirates and the game of rugby football was special, working alongside so many 'Pirate' personalities over the years. She never married, but family clearly still meant much to her, as she enjoyed the company of relatives not just in this country, but also in South Africa and the USA.
Having lived in Newlyn, Mary only a few months ago moved to Hanover Court in Penzance, which she liked.
Mary's funeral service will take place at 11am on Monday13th June at Treswithian Downs Crematorium, Camborne, with family and friends then invited to gather at the Pirates 'Westholme' clubhouse.
