A former Pirates player, Micky James, sadly passed away suddenly on Friday.

Aged 67, Micky played over 300 games for the club and was a member of the 1976 Cornwall KO Cup winning side, featuring as a powerful centre.

During his rugby career he also played briefly for Redruth and for Bath, where he was a prolific points scorer, and he coached the Pirates in 1971/72.

A gifted sportsman, in his youth Micky was also a strong swimmer who played water polo for Penzance and Cornwall.

After his rugby playing days were over, with others Micky put much effort to boost the social side of the club, enthusiastically and ably organising different events, including Tramps' Balls and very successful New Year's Eve parties.

Micky was a Penzance boy through and through, and his father Edgar, who ran a taxi business for many years from their home in Queen Street, played for Penzance in the 1920s.
