Viliami (Vili) Ma’asi could perform equally well as a hooker or as a flanker and during his lengthy spell with the Pirates the popular Tongan became something of a local folk hero.

Vili arrived as an unknown triallist in Dec 2001 when the Pirates were still in National 3 (South) but soon announced himself with his bullocking runs and bone crunching tackles as befits a young man from Tonga.

In due course he settled at hooker and played in that position for his country in the 1993 World Cup in Australia.

Vili had six seasons in Cornwall but probably left the best until last when he scored in every round of the EDF Trophy bar the first, rounding it off with what proved to be the winner at Twickenham.

He then moved on to have a few seasons at Leeds getting extensive Premiership experience and then moved to London Welsh where he came on as a replacement against the Pirates in both legs of the 2012 Final.
