A tough, no nonsense New Zealander, Tim Cowley could be relied upon to do a fine job anywhere in the back five of the scrum.

Despite only being just over six feet tall he won a lot of lineout ball as well as being a hard uncompromising tackler.

He first came to the Pirates’ notice when he led an otherwise mediocre Manchester team in which he stood out like a beacon and proved to be one of Kevin Moseley’s last but very best signings.

Having starred in the back row in the EDF Final victory in 2007 playing alongside Canadian Stan McKeen and his great pal Iva Motusaga, he took over from Gavin Cattle as captain when the Welshman went off to Llanelli Scarlets.

Cowley seemed to revel in the big occasion and he never played better than the three high pressure matches with Northampton Saints.

When he finally left to try his luck in France many Pirates fans were distraught to see him go. Tim’s time in France was badly disrupted by injuries but he is still remembered fondly in Cornwall.
