Rhodri McAtee - Wing

Seasons 2004/12

When the Pirates signed a young Rhodri McAtee from Worcester in the summer of 2004 just a few weeks short of his twentieth birthday, they had signed not a winger but a scrum half.

Initially he shared those duties with Gavin Cattle and scored a dazzling 50 yard breakaway try at Old Deer Park.

His second season was interrupted by injuries but when Jim McKay tried him at full back he responded with a spectacular hat trick against Doncaster at Kenwyn.

It was not until his third season that he settled down as a winger and a highly unorthodox and exciting one at that.

Rhodri had also shown himself to have a real penchant for Rugby Sevens and played regularly for Wales - finally winning a coveted World Cup winners medal in the shortened game.

Despite niggling injuries he continued to excite supporters with his zig-zag runs and vital tries with his one against Munster in the B&I Final being a case in point.

He also played in the EDF Final at Twickenham in 2007 and appeared in both Championship play-off finals.

He found it difficult to claim a regular place last season and, to the disappointment of many, has now joined Plymouth Albion.
